KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Just Heavenly is synonymous with divine cakes. They’ve always had an excellent savoury menu as well, but they’ve just upped their game with an array of offers that we simply can’t resist.
Appealing to the naughty side, while indulging the good, what’s plated up is our idea of balance.
Saint & Sinner
The Saint & Sinner offer has us extremely intrigued – 50% off a salad with any slice of cake. Yes, please!
After all, who can really resist walking by that display without grabbing a slice? It’s still the festive season, so go ahead and indulge!
The only thing tougher than picking a slice of cake is picking which salad you’re going to have. We’re not big on tasteless beds of iceberg, so when we tell you these salads are worth it even without the reward of cake, you better believe it.
For an Asian twist, the Char Siew Chicken Salad (RM21, USD5.15) won’t steer you wrong. The use of chicken in this dish lightens the fattiness that regular char siew brings.
Fans of pesto absolutely shouldn’t skip out on the Toasty Quinoa and Pumpkin Salad (RM28, USD6.87), and it’s a great vegetarian option as well. The pesto is relatively mild because it’s well-balanced, so it’s perfect for those who aren’t keen on the hit of basil that can sometimes be excessive.
Our favourite, though, has to be the Tuna Schooner Salad (RM21, USD5.15). It’s only partially to do with the name, but the salad itself had everything we love in it. Pasta, fresh vegetables, and a vinaigrette that eliminates the fishiness of the tuna.
You can’t go wrong with any of the cakes at Just Heavenly, but if you’re looking for a serious hit of chocolate, you must have their Chocolate Banana Cake. It’s rich, decadent, and so intensely satisfying that the macaron on top is almost unnecessary – ALMOST!
But what we have dreams about is their Black Velvet Cake. Black sesame and tangy cream cheese anyone? We’d honestly pick this over a traditional red velvet any day.
Rice Plates (RM17, USD4.14)
If you need your carb fix (this is our constant state, so we know), their new rice plates are an excellent choice. Think of it as chap fan with better ingredients. Iced Lemon Tea is included in the price, but if you’d like a coffee (in any of its forms) instead you just need to add an additional RM5 (USD1.23).
For a taste of Japan, their Tempura Rice Plate offers you a delicious medley of fish, prawn and vegetables in a light, crispy batter. If you’re not keen on seafood, opt for the Chicken Katsu Curry. We loved just how good this was without the cloying aftertaste that some Japanese curry dishes tend to leave.
The Masala Butter Chicken is an excellent choice, too. It’s a lighter dish than what you’d get at an Indian restaurant in the best possible way. It packs the punch of all that flavour without drying out the chicken, too.
Koji-Rubbed Sizzling Steak (RM80, USD19.50)
But what you really need to have this season is the sizzling steak. A 200g ribeye marinated in a koji (yeast used in Asian cooking) rub for three days to give it that dry-aged taste and texture.
It doesn’t hurt that it’s incredibly Instagram-able with that sizzle, but the flavour is where it’s at.
The meat is tender, and infused with a ton of umami from the yeast. We highly, highly recommend you try this if you’re in the area.
For the record, the chips are excellent as well! – The Binge
