BERLIN, Germany – Beer is a drink that’s been connected to the city of Berlin for as long as anyone can remember. Pubs, clubs, spätis (convenience stores), and breweries are in every nook and cranny of the city, ready to quench one’s thirst. One brewery towards the outskirts of the city, however, is offering not just brews but an amazing venue to drink them as well.
Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Berlin is located in the Mariendorf neighbourhood, a good 15-minute walk from the nearest U-Bahn station. But trust us on this – the place, the beers on tap, and even the food, are all worth the trek.
Stone Brewing is a craft beer company founded in California by two friends with German roots – Greg Koch and Steven Wagner. Expanding to Europe, it seemed that Germany was the most obvious choice. Keeping their options open, they still looked at nine different countries but ultimately found the perfect spot in Berlin.
The property they chose is the site of a former gasworks facility built in 1901. It doesn’t just house the brewery, it also has restaurants, gardens, and event spaces.
There’s a casual, cosy feel to the whole place despite its massive size. Just the indoor area of the restaurant can accommodate around 800 people.
What’s on the menu?
The bistro side of Stone Brewing offers 75 different types of beer on tap, as well as an eclectic menu. Mostly Western food that goes well with a pint, dishes are prepared using organic ingredients.
As is the trend in Berlin, Stone Brewing also advocates for environmental responsibility and the Slow Food Movement. This definitely makes one less guilty for finishing their rib-eye steak by themselves.
Tour the brewery
Another thing people can enjoy at Stone Brewing is a tour. For just EUR3 (USD3.47), you get a 45-minute tour of the brewing facilities so you can learn more about how beer is made.
Included in the tour is a beer tasting session at the end. It is definitely a great way to cap off any tour. You get to try an original Berliner Weiße and their famous Arrogant Bastard, among others.
For beer drinkers, this is a surely a great stop when visiting Berlin. For those looking for a great hangout spot, this is a must-try this Summer. It also doesn’t hurt that the place is highly Instagram-able.
- The place itself. It’s gorgeous, especially in the Summer
- 75 beers on tap – need we say more?
- The commute. If you have a car or a Drive Now account, just go for a drive since there’s also ample parking. Make sure you appoint a designated driver before the night ends, though!
