KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – When asked what she would be doing if she weren’t in the floral industry, Penny Choo seems a little startled. The Co-Founder and creative head of BloomThis simply cannot imagine an alternative life to the one that she and her husband, Giden Lim, have carved out for themselves with their online floral business.
Thanks to a lot of hard work, as well as an uncanny ability to work constructively as a husband and wife team, Choo and Lim, have seen their BloomThis brand grow rapidly. In less than two years and despite emerging from a traditionally offline industry, BloomThis has become Malaysia’s premier purveyor of online floral and gifting packages.
To date, BloomThis has expanded sales and deliveries to most of Peninsular Malaysia and more recently, have launched into Singapore too. In fact, Choo and Lim have harnessed all that’s good about working as a dynamic duo to create a successful business model that works well with their marriage.
The pair met while working in a completely unrelated industry – pharmaceuticals, to be exact, and found that their jobs dealing with chemicals was to bless them with a different kind of chemistry – a passion for each other.
A courtship began, but the colleagues soon left their day jobs to embark on a mutual passion project that would involve adapting Lim’s mother’s bricks-and-mortar florist business to the Internet age.
Despite the best intentions, their first attempts at modernising the business proved challenging and unsuccessful. Yet they persevered with a unified dream to build a working business model; as well as a life together.
Then, in 2015, BloomThis was born. And this time, they got it right. Today, BloomThis remains the couple’s magnum opus and is an ever-evolving mirror of the couple’s business savvy as well as a testament to the strength of their relationship, too.
In between the madness of building the platform and executing brand strategies for their startup, the couple juggled the workload at BloomThis with a blossoming personal life together. Finally, late last year, Lim and Choo found the time to cement their relationship with a very floral wedding.
“We really love what we do and also, because we love each other, that’s why we love what we do”
Choo admits that living and working with your spouse is harder work than it appears. Beyond the glamour of their joyful social media postings lie many challenges. She concedes that maintaining a relationship is hard enough, but it is made all the more difficult with the demands that running a business places upon it.
To other couples hoping to find the same synergy with their work and love life, both Lim and Choo remain pragmatic.
“You should prioritise the relationship because it is the foundation of your life,” says Choo.
Lim echoes her sentiments perfectly, “It’s the mantra we live by – whatever happens, the relationship comes first!”.
Lim doesn’t hesitate to express how grateful and proud he is for having the beautiful and highly creative Choo in his life. Despite having grown up with a florist mother, it was his relationship with Choo that has given him the reason to build BloomThis as Malaysia’s ultimate floral and gifting company.
And, it is Choo who helms the company’s creative vision. Having learned the business from the ground up, Choo is now responsible for overseeing the creative development of an ever-changing, seasonal product range at BloomThis. She is also the very public face of the brand, and along with her husband, often showcases the couple’s special moments in their life on her social media channels.
In fact, the company’s tag line – Creating Moments – is a reflection of their own relationship milestones. Through the gifting of BloomThis flowers and gift packages, Lim and Choo want their customers to create equally memorable moments in their own lives.
The founders of BloomThis feel that Creating Moments perfectly encapsulates the philosophy behind the brand. Where flowers and gifting are the medium, the entire focus of the BloomThis experience is about being there for their customers’ most meaningful moments in life – love, births, celebrations and more.
Both Lim and Choo are relieved that they have been able to balance their love and professional lives thus far. Choo is proud to say that their example of a good working relationship has been critical to the company’s success. The effect of which, she feels, has trickled down to their team.
BloomThis was born from a love story and it’s very interesting how this foundation of love and respect has had a very positive influence on the work culture at BloomThis. The BloomThis team is like a family, and have stood together time and time again to weather their share of ups and downs in the highly seasonal floral business.
BloomThis is currently all hands on deck for Valentine’s Day 2017. Pre-ordering is advised for a guaranteed 14th of February delivery date. The BloomThis website and hotline will be open all weekend to take orders and answer enquiries.
